Why he’s a legend
The legacy
George Rogers was taken first overall in the 1981 draft ahead of Lawrence Taylor and led the NFL in rushing as a rookie with 1,674 yards, then a record for a first-year player. He was Offensive Rookie of the Year on a team that won four games. Four seasons in New Orleans made him the franchise’s statistical standard for running backs until Deuce McAllister passed him two decades later.
Why he matters
- Led the NFL in rushing as a rookie in 1981 with 1,674 yards, a rookie record at the time.
- Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year, and a Pro Bowl selection in his first season.
- The first overall pick of the 1981 draft, and the franchise’s first genuine offensive star of the 1980s.
- He won Super Bowl XXII with Washington after leaving New Orleans.
- His rookie yardage total is still the most any Saint has run for in a single season by a first-year player.
