Why he’s a legend
The legacy
Pat Swilling was the outside rusher on the Dome Patrol and the most explosive of the four. In 1991 he had seventeen sacks and was named Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year — still the only Saint to win the award — on a team that won the first division title in franchise history. Seven seasons in New Orleans made him one of the two or three most productive pass rushers the club has ever had.
Why he matters
- The only New Orleans Saint named Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year, in 1991.
- His 17 sacks in 1991 remain among the highest single-season totals in franchise history.
- Five Pro Bowl selections, four of them consecutive as a Saint from 1989 through 1992.
- One of the four Dome Patrol linebackers selected to the same Pro Bowl after the 1992 season.
- He was the leading rusher on the defense that produced the franchise’s first NFC West title in 1991.

Era context
What the league looked like while Pat Swilling played it. Raw totals across eras are not like-for-like.
Dome Patrol & The First Winners
1981–1996
The franchise finally wins — and builds the best linebacking corps the NFL had seen.
- Sacks became an official NFL statistic in 1982, so career sack totals begin there.
- The 1982 season was shortened to nine games by a players strike; 1987 was shortened to fifteen, three of them played by replacement players.
- The salary cap arrived in 1994 and changed how long a roster could stay together.
- The Saints reached the playoffs four times in this era and did not win a postseason game.
