Why he’s a legend
The legacy
Terron Armstead came from Arkansas-Pine Bluff and ran 4.71 seconds in the forty at the 2013 combine, the fastest time an offensive lineman had recorded there. The Saints took him in the third round and he started at left tackle for nine seasons, making three Pro Bowls and holding down the blind side for the last decade of Drew Brees’s career.
Why he matters
- Three Pro Bowl selections as a Saint, at the position the roster has had the hardest time filling since Willie Roaf.
- He protected Drew Brees’s blind side for nine seasons, including the four consecutive division titles from 2017 to 2020.
- A third-round pick out of an FCS program — the kind of evaluation win that decides whether an offense stays functional.
- His 4.71-second forty at the 2013 combine was the fastest ever run by an offensive lineman at the event.
Defining moment
The 2017–2020 line
Across four consecutive division titles, the Saints built one of the league’s best offensive lines around Armstead at left tackle and Ryan Ramczyk at right. Brees’s late-career efficiency — including the 74.4 percent completion season in 2018 — is not separable from that protection.

Era context
What the league looked like while Terron Armstead played it. Raw totals across eras are not like-for-like.
The Brees & Payton Era
2006–2020
A quarterback nobody else wanted, a coach nobody had hired, and a Super Bowl.
- The most pass-friendly rules environment in NFL history to that point; raw passing totals from these years dwarf every earlier era.
- Sixteen-game seasons throughout, with a 12-team playoff field from 2020.
- The franchise won seven division titles in this span, including four consecutive from 2017 to 2020.
The Modern Saints
2021–present
Life after the quarterback who rewrote the record book.
- Seasons expanded to 17 games in 2021, so single-season totals from 2021 onward are not directly comparable to earlier ones.
- The playoff field has been 14 teams since 2020.
- Careers in progress: statistics for active players are stated through a named season and will move.
